Dear Third Graders,
I cannot believe our school year is coming to an end. You will be on your way to fourth grade soon! We've had a great school year. We've laughed together and cried together. (It's ok to admit you cried when we read the end of Stone Fox. You know I did! :)) We've made a lot of memories this year. Some of the great memories I have with you all from this school year are: Playing buzz our field trip to Natural Bridge Caverns building land forms making infomercials for severe weather spending times with our kindergarten buddies our winter party Market Day cursive on a Monday! Pioneer day, publishing parties Mustang Mania book clubs our poetry cafe the football math and baseball math projects (which one did you like better?) the Tournament of Books Wayside School James and the Giant Peach the "peach party" in honor of Roald Dahl science day tracking the Iditarod mushers biome balls the planetarium visit We liked ice cream and guacamole... ..but we didn't like bananas. Out of My Mind compliment parties SAFELY buzzers Hubble 3D at the IMAX McPufferson, Rad Chad, Weevil Labeevil and all our GoNoodle friends ...and we're not even finished with the school year! Imagine all the great things we can add to this list over the next few days! I think my favorite memory from this school year was one of the first times you earned a compliment party. You chose your reward to be for me to bring Hailey to school so you could sing "Happy Birthday" to her right before first birthday. It was such a sweet moment and you know she loved being the center of attention. ;-) I am truly going to miss you next year. I wish you could stay in third grade a little longer! You will love being a fourth grader and your fourth grade teacher will love you!!! Promise you'll come back and visit me and my new group of third graders next year! Love, Mrs. Shannon

Today our class celebrated our compliment party by reading outside with our kindergarten buddies. It was a perfect day to sit outside and read. Thanks for joining us, Mrs. Carpenter's class! Third graders,
Here are a few links you can use to help with today's biomes project. Biomes facts World Biomes Kids Discover Biomes BrainPop Land Biomes Which biome interests you the most? What are some facts or information you already know about that biome that you'd like to share? After a month of reading, analyzing and comparing our books in the "Tournament of books," we have chosen a winner: I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916! Third graders, How do you feel about the final outcome? Are there any other books that you think should have been in our tournament? The students had mixed emotions on the final vote! Today, the entire 3rd grade took a big math quiz together in the cafeteria. Instead of using paper and pencil, we used a "game based" question response system called Kahoot. The students had so much fun! It was a great way to practice the math strategies and objectives we've been going over in class. Our very own Adrian won 3rd place overall! And congratulations to Aaliya in Ms. Coffield's class for winning first place!
It's time for March Madness! The tournament of books is beginning next week. We will vote on our favorite books and have a winner chosen by the first week of April.
The "Sweet 16" are: Stone Fox I Survived the Shark Attacks of 1916 Pierre I Survived the Nazi Invasion of 1941 Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie Fly Away Home Togo Wayside School is Falling Down James and the Giant Peach Sideways Stories from Wayside School Junkyard Wonders Dear Dumb Diary: Let's Pretend This Never Happened Adventures of Shark Lady Where the Sidewalk Ends Ginger and Petunia If you have read the two books that are "competing" against one another, you are eligible to vote. You may use Daily 5 time next week to read any of the books you have not yet read so that you can vote on Friday. Which book do you think will win? Are there any other books that you think should have been a part of the tournament? Our exciting poetry unit is in full swing and we're having a lot of fun. We have studied alliteration, similes, personification and metaphors. We have also written acrostics.
Today to celebrate World Poetry Day, we started a new type of poem: Haiku. The haiku is a poem form from Japan that consists of three lines. The first line is five syllables, the second line is seven syllables and the third is five syllables. We had so much fun brainstorming and creating our haiku. There was a variety of topics written about, from cheeseburgers and bacon to spring time and butterflies. We can't wait to publish these in our poetry cafe books! We celebrated World Read Aloud Day on March 5. It was such a great opportunity for the students to hear readers share books with the class! Thank you to the parents who participated!
Dear Third Graders,
This week, I am choosing our brain break activities! I do like GoNoodle, but I'm also a huge fan of "Hot Potato" and "Double Dream Hands." Which brain breaks should I use? Use persuasive writing in your answer. Love, Mrs. Shannon Dear Students,
Sunday is Dr. Seuss' birthday. If he were alive, he'd turn 100 this year! My favorite book by Dr. Seuss is The Zax. It's not one of his most famous stories, but I think it's really funny. Hailey likes for me to read Fox in Socks and Hop on Pop to her. On Monday, we'll read a great book by Dr. Seuss called Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! Dr. Seuss started writing this book but never finished, so two other authors finished it for him in the style that matched his writing. I think you will really enjoy it. What are some of your favorite books by Dr. Seuss? Love, Mrs. Shannon |
